Abstract:In this study, we examined the passive flight capacity and flight willingness of the rice leaf roller Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenée) by flight mill and positive flight monitoring system. Our results indicated that flight capacity of adult C. medinalis was strong and there exist obvious variance among moths on day 1-4 after emergence. moths in day 1 were all obviously weaker than that on day 2. On day 4 after emergence, flight distance and duration both decreased, but the difference was not significant. In male adults, however, there were no obvious differences in flight capacity among 1-4 d. And we hypothesized that migratory flight of moth for one night was less than 12h because flight capacity in 18h tethered group was not significantly higher than that in 12h group. Positive flight monitoring test revealed that the flight diurnal rhythm and it directly proved that adult rice leaf roller flight during dark period. The strongest flight willingness time of C. medinalis moth may be day 1 after emergence. These results expand our awareness on migratory biology of C. medinalis, as well as providing practical information toward establishing effective population monitoring and forecasting projects for this species
