Abstract:

[Objectives]  To identify chemical lures for trappin maleand femalMonolepthieroglyphica (Motschulsky). [Methods]  Electroantennography and a Y-shaped olfactometer were used to test the electroantennography (EAG) and behavioral responses of M. hieroglyphica to selected cotton and corn volatiles. [Results]  The results show that the most significant EAG responses of M. hieroglyphica males and females were elicited by 10 μg·mL-1 and 1 μg·mL-1 of γ-terpinene, 10 μg·mL-1 of D-limonene, and 10 μg·mL-1 of β-Ionone, followed by 10 μg·mL-1 and 10-2 μg·mL-1 of α-caryophyllene, and 10 μg·mL-1, 1 μg·mL-1 and 10-2 μg·mL-1 of caryophyllene oxide. Both males and females had a lower response to odecane and tridecane. A Student’s t-test showed significant differences in the EAG responses of males and females to partial concentrations of volatiles. The results of Y-shaped olfactometer bioassays indicate that females were attracted by 10 μg/mL of β-Ionone, but were repelled by γ-terpinene and caryophyllene oxide. Males were attracted by γterpinene andDlimonene but repulsed by β-Ionone. [Conclusion]  These results can provide a basis for developing attractants for M. hieroglyphica in the field.
