The complete mitochondrial genomes of lepidopteran insects and the mtDNA gene structure were summarized, and recent advances in molecular systematics in Lepidoptera were reviewed in this paper. The significance and problems existing in the study of mtDNA in terms of species identification, phylogenetic relationships and population structure within a species were also discussed.
