Abstract:

Morphological characteristics of Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford),the new pest attacking grapevine, were studied with the aid of scanning electron microscope. The beetle had sexual dimorphism. The adults were shiny. The female adults are cylindrical and about 2.02~2.26 mm in length while the male adults were flat and 1.00~1.30mm. With the aid of scanning electron microscope, the hair in the sculpture of the costal margin of the adult's prothorax was divided into two branches, the female's was serrate while the male's was pectinate. The mycangia of the female adults lay inside the pronotum. The female adults' elytrons could be divided into striae and interstriae, and the hind half of the elytron had long hair only from interstriae. The male adults' elytrons could not be divided into striae and interstriae, and only the hind half of the elytron had some long hair.
