Abstract: The insect yolk precursor protein, vitellogenin (Vg), is a lipoglycoprotein synthesized by the fat body and secreted into hemolymph from where it is sequestered by the growing oocytes via receptor mediated endocytosis. Vitellogenin receptor (VgR) is the major receptor of Vg. The sequences of several vertebrate and invertebrate vitellogenin receptors are known. VgR belongs to the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) superfamily. Considering the importance of VgR in insect reproduction, we summarize the cloning and expression character, function and regulation of this receptor in insects.
