[Objectives] Henosepilachna pusillanima (Mulsant) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a phytophagous insect that feeds on cucurbitaceous plants and is considered an economic pest. This study aims to evaluate the effects of five cucurbitaceous host-plants on the development and reproduction of this ladybird beetle. [Methods] Under laboratory conditions of (26±1)℃, 60%±5% R.H. and a photoperiod of 14L︰10D, H. pusillanima were reared on either the young, fully expanded leaves of ridged gourd (Luffa acutangula), squash (Cucurbita moschata), cucumber (Cucumis sativus), wax gourd (Benincasa hispida var. chieh-qua), or ivy gourd (Coccinia grandis. The development of each life stage on each plant was observed. Freshly emerged adults were paired, and the number of eggs laid daily by adult females during their life-span determined. [Results] The results show that, with the exception of the prepupal and pupal stages, different cucurbit host-plants significantly affect the developmental duration of each immature stage, as well as the immature period, pre-oviposition period, ovipostion period, and lifetime female longevity. The immature period of H. pusillanima on ridged gourd, squash, cucumber, wax gourd, and ivy gourd lasted on average for 27.43, 28.03, 28.88, 29.33, and 28.01 days, respectively. Females reared on ridged gourd and ivy gourd had a shorter pre-ovipotion period, a longer ovipotion period, and a longer life-span, compared with those reared on squash, cucumber, and wax gourd. The mean lifetime fecundity of the females on ridged gourd and ivy gourd was 2 039.79 and 1 637.11 eggs, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of females reared on the other three cucurbits. The age-specific cumulative oviposition rate of females on all tested cucurbit host was best described by the three-parameter Weibull function. [Conclusion] Ridged gourd and ivy gourd were the most suitable host plants among the five cucurbits tested for the development and reproduction of H. pusillanima.
