We evaluated the responses of Monochamus alternatus Hope (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) adults to the sawyer beetle pheromone and host-plant volatile kairomones to determine an optimal lure for the management of M. alternatus adults. Our results showed that the male-produced aggregation pheromone of M. galloprovincialis, 2-undecyloxy-1-ethanol, is attractive to M. alternatus males and females. Moreover traps baited with a combination of the aggregation pheromone of M. galloprovincialis and host volatiles was significantly superior, catching 4-5 times more M. alternatus adults than the pheromone or host volatiles alone. The result of Monochamus alternatus female ovary development showed that the adult stage in Zhejiang last about four months, and adult stage can be divided into two phases, the first phase is the feeding period (the ovaries are immature), from May 9 to July 9; the second stage is the ovipositing period (the ovaries are mature), from June 3 to September 18, and there is an overlap between two phases over a period of time. It is hoped that removal trapping of M. alternatus adults with the combination lure of the pheromone and host volatiles will play an important role in controlling the spread of the pinewood nematode.
