Abstract: The spatial distribution pattern of Dendroctonus valens(LeConte) was investigated in Beijing. The results indicate that spatial distribution was aggregated, probably because D. valens has an innate tendency to aggregate, or because of a combination of this and environmental heterogeneity. Using Iwao’s statistical methods, models to determine the optimal theoretical sampling number and the optimal sequential sampling number are presented.
