Abstract:The structure of compound eye of alates Odontotermes formosanus(Shiraki); and the characteristics of pigment granule movement under light and dark adaptation were investigated with optics microscope and histologyical slice. The results showed that compound eyes was hemisphere in shape of. The compound eyes of alates O. formosanus belonged to the type of apposition eyes. Each ompound eye was composed of approximately 360 ommatidia. Each ommatidium consisted of a cornea, a cone, retinula cell, rhabdom and basal cell. Each retinula cell contained abundant pigment granules. In the lightadapted state, the distribution of the pigment ranules were mainly around the top region ofrhabdoms, however, the pigment granules distributed evenly around rhabdoms in the dark-adapted state. No difference was observed between male and female.
