Abstract：The relationship between the resistance of cotton against cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, and the activity of phenylalanine ammonia_lyase (PAL) was studied by detecting the activity of PAL in the leaves of different resistant varieties of cotton under different damage conditions. The results indicated that there was no difference in the PAL activity between resistant varieties and susceptible varieties when cotton was not harmed by aphids. However, the PAL activities in all the materials increased significantly after harmed by aphids, in which the resistant varieties showed significantly higher PAL activities than susceptible varieties. In field, the proportion of individuals with aphids was significantly negative correlated to the PAL activity in cotton leaves. It revealed that the PAL activity was correlated to the resistance of cotton against aphids.
