Abstract:Mating behavior and ability of the black cutworm, Agrotis ypsilon (Rottemberg) were studied under the laboratory conditions (25±1℃, RH 70%±7%, L14∶D10). The results indicated that moths were not able to mate until one day later after emergence. All male and female moths observed can mate many times, and their mating ability was obviously influenced by the sex ratio. The ability was very low when one male was confined with only one female, but the ability increased significantly when one male was confined with more than two females, or one female confined with more than two males. The implication of the findings to control the back cutworm in fields was discussed.
